Impact of structured training programme about hospital acquired infection on knowledge of nursing students at public and private nursing teaching institution of Haryana State- An interventional study

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are infections that occur while receiving health care, developed in a
hospital or other health care facility that first appear 48 hours or more after hospital admission, or within 30
days after having received health care.
OBJECTIVE: 1. To evaluate the existing knowledge regarding hospital acquired infection among nursing students.
2. To evaluate the impact of structured training programme about hospital acquired infection on
knowledge of nursing students.
METHODOLOGY: It was a single group pre-post intervention study conducted among the nursing students of Government and
Private Nursing college of Haryana through digital platform. Total 395 participants were trained. Firstly, the
structured questionnaire was administered before starting the training session to evaluate nursing student’s
existing knowledge. The participants were imparted structured training programme. After that to evaluate
the impact of training the same study tool was administered immediately after the training programme.
Informed consent from individual participants was also obtained digitally. The data was analyzed by Mauchly’s
Test of Sphericity, one-way repeated measure ANOVA test, & Bonferroni corrections.
RESULTS: It was observed that 58% participants were in the age group of 21-30 years, 96% were females, 77% were
pursuing BSc Nursing and 51% were from urban background. On average, respondents scored 79.4430 [SD
17.49746, p= 0.0001] on the pretest, 96.5443 [SD 25.42322, p= 0.0001] on the posttest immediately after
training, and 84.4937 [SD 22.40313, p= 0.0001] on the posttest one month later.
CONCLUSION: The structured training programme has shown overall significant improvement in the knowledge among
nursing students about various aspects of hospital acquired infection.
